History of the Calumet Community Presbyterian Church
The Calumet Church was organized on Oct. 21, 1924. The Rev. William J. Bell was the moderator of the session and the stated supply pastor at the time. It seems that Sunday School classes began before that, sometime in 1920. Miss Helene Gallien, the Calumet Grade School Principal, asked the Duluth Presbytery for help in organizing the Sunday School. To begin with, worship, Sunday School, Christian Endeavor, and Vacation Bible School were all held at the Calumet Grade School. The Rev. William J. Bell was head of the Range Parish which included Gilbert, Tower, Mt. Iron, Keewatin, and Calumet. This group worked together from 1915 to 1936. The Calumet Church building was completed in 1931. Church members worked hard to raise the money for the building and they were assisted in its construction by the Boy Scouts and volunteers and equipment from the Hill Annex Mine. Miss Louise E. Murray came to work in the Range Parish and became a kind of "patron saint" for the Calumet Church. Many of our church members have fond memories of Sunday School and choir practice led by Miss Murray. Sometimes the choir went out to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps to sing. |
